Local Programs Water Quality Program for Agriculture (WQPA)
The Portneuf SWCD applied for and received a
WQPA grant through the State of Idaho Soil Conservation Commission in 2007. The
grant is for the Marsh Creek Watershed; the goal of the project is to reduce
sediment, nutrient, and bacteria loads on 20 miles of stream. The project
will achieve these goals by implementing Best Management Practices with
cooperating land managers that have Animal Feeding Operations within the
Marsh Creek Watershed Area. For more information on this project, call the
PSWCD office or Ben Evans at 237-4628.
Marsh Creek §319 Grant The District was awarded a DEQ §319 Non Point Source Grant for the Marsh Creek Watershed Project in 2007. This project's goal is to reduce or eliminate run-off from six to eight animal feeding operations on the creek, and to improve riparian habitat and grazing management in the watershed. Several land owners have applied for participation. If you would like more information on this project, please call the PSWCD office or Ben Evans. Carbon Credits from Idaho Rangeland Three Rivers RC&D and High Country RC&D Councils are pleased to announce the start up of "The Idaho Pilot Project." This Project will inform ranchers and farmers on how to utilize their private grazing lands for carbon credits, a commodity sold on the Chicago Climate Exchange. Kevin Koester, Carbon Credit Coordinator for the Project, works directly with the land owner in determining the eligible land for this new opportunity. The next portfolio of acres in SE Idaho will be sent onto the National Carbon Offset Coalition (NCOC) in the fall of 2008, so get your applications into the RC&D office as soon as possible. NCOC will market the acres to the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX) for carbon credits after receiving your application. A portfolio will most likely be approved for this fall and with another one planned for April 2009. Check out www.3riversrcd.org for more detailed information.
