About PSWCD
The Portneuf Soil and Water Conservation
District is a nonprofit organization that is directed by an elected board of
supervisors and volunteer associates. The Board meets monthly to discuss
conservation issues.
The District was organized on May 18,
1940. As at the conception the District, now at the age of
68, promotes conservation and protection of our natural resources.
The District also has a strong emphasis on conservation education
programs for people of all ages.
The District is funded by the state and
local government, and uses their funding for
conservation and education programs, to identify local natural
resource conservation needs, and to provide services to land owners.
There is one District employee, but the Board and their employee
do not work alone. They work directly with United States Department of
Agriculture (USDA), Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), Farm
Service Agency (FSA), Idaho Association of Soil Conservation Districts (IASCD),
and Soil Conservation Commission (SCC).
The District provides to the community through programs, education,
and service. One of the most recent programs the District has been involved
in is the Upper Rapid Creek Project. The District was awarded a 319 grant
that enabled them to fund the project. An assessment was done on the
forks of Rapid Creek by employees of the commission,
district, NRCS, and IASCD. From the data found, the Board was able to
give landowners suggestions of what they could personally do to benefit
their own land and the water quality on their property.
Education is a focus of the District. There is a newsletter that is
printed every two months, and tours and educational sessions are sponsored by the
Board to help inform landowners and other citizens of programs that are
available to help conserve the land and water. |
